Livelihood & Women Empowerment

We work with communities to enhance their future prosperity by increasing their ability to successfully manage their own livelihood options and improve their food security. Our activities also focus on empowering women so that they can generate their own income and become empowered in all aspects (social, economical, political)..

Gender Equality:
Of the estimated 1.3 billion people that live in absolute poverty globally, 70% are women. Women account for just 10% of the world's income and own less than 1% of the world's property. India is no different with just 55% of women literate, compared to 78% of males. Gender equality is important, not only as a human right, but also because women have a key role to play in sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goal's. Through our Sabuj Jeevan Deep Prakalpa programme, we have formed 655 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) comprising of over 10,000 women, empowering women on their rights, increasing their access to credit, and ensuring their participation in the development process.

Livelihood Development:
In order to alleviate poverty, is critical that communities have access to livelihood opportunities. Through our Model Villages in the Sundarban Delta and Economic Upliftment through Sustainable Livelihood Generation projects, we work with communities to develop sustainable livelihood opportunities; enhancing food security and increasing their ability to manage livelihood options. We provide both financial and technical support, as well as promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities such as Poultry Farming, Small Business, Systematic Rice Intensification and Pond-Based Integrated Farming.

Access to Credit:
Ensuring that families have adequate access to financial resources is a key component of successful livelihood development. Furthermore, without adequate access to loans or insurance, families are vulnerable to negative shocks, such as natural disasters, illness or other unforeseen circumstances. Through our SHG programme and the formation of links with banks and other financial institutions, we facilitate families' access to credit so that they can generate their own income and take decisions for their well-being.
