World Environment Day 2026 Observed Across West Bengal: Communities Unite for a Greener Future

West Bengal | June 5, 2026

Sabuj Sangha observed World Environment Day 2026 with great enthusiasm across multiple districts of West Bengal, bringing together school students, teachers, community members, volunteers, and local stakeholders in a collective effort to promote environmental conservation and sustainable living.

This year’s global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”, served as a guiding message for a series of awareness and action-oriented activities conducted under various programmes supported by organizations including SBI Foundation, HDFC, LTF, and other development partners.

Environmental Awareness Activities Across West Bengal.

The observance witnessed active participation from school students, teachers, community leaders, women’s groups, and local residents. A variety of activities were organized, including:

Environmental awareness rallies

Plantation drives

Community awareness sessions

Sit & Draw competitions for students

Cleanliness and sanitation drives

As part of the plantation initiative, saplings were planted in schools, community spaces, and along the embankments of the Bhagirathi River. These efforts aimed to enhance local green cover, promote biodiversity, and encourage long-term environmental stewardship among community members.

The activities created a platform for discussion on pressing environmental challenges while inspiring collective responsibility towards protecting natural resources and combating climate change.

Promoting Sustainable Practices at the Grassroots

Throughout the programme areas, awareness was generated on several sustainable environmental practices, including:

Vermicomposting (Kecho Sar)

Waste segregation and management

Plastic waste reduction

Water conservation

Energy conservation

Organic farming and soil health improvement

Particular emphasis was placed on the promotion of vermicomposting, which converts biodegradable household and agricultural waste into nutrient-rich organic manure. The initiative not only improves soil fertility but also contributes to reducing environmental pollution and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Community members were encouraged to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives, reinforcing the message that small individual actions can collectively create significant environmental impact.

Statewide Observance Across West Bengal

Sabuj Sangha organized and supported World Environment Day observances across several districts of West Bengal—from Alipurduar in the north to Sagar Island in the south. Through diverse programmes and partnerships, thousands of community members participated in awareness campaigns, plantation drives, educational activities, and environmental action initiatives.

The celebrations reflected Sabuj Sangha’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, community empowerment, and climate resilience through grassroots engagement.

A Collective Commitment for the Future

World Environment Day 2026 served as a reminder that environmental protection is a shared responsibility. Every tree planted, every kilogram of waste recycled, every drop of water conserved, and every individual inspired contributes to building a healthier and more sustainable future.

Sabuj Sangha extends its gratitude to all participants, schools, community members, Digital Sakhis, volunteers, partner organizations, and supporters who made the celebrations meaningful and impactful.

Together, let us continue to be inspired by nature and work collectively for our climate, our communities, and our future.
